SDCC: Marvel Video Games

Posted on July 21, 2012 AT 10:28pm

At San Diego Comic Con 2012, gaming was featured more than it ever was, with some of the major comic book companies (including the biggest of them all, Marvel Comics), getting in on all the fun. Marvel, with their numerous properties and multimedia prowess, held a panel for all their gaming properties, both new and established. This was easily one of the better panels of the convention, with some of Marvel’s biggest names, including editor-in-chief Axel Alonso on hand for some of the announcements.

Of the already established games to be mentioned, the focus was on the Facebook game Marvel: Avengers Alliance. This turn based RPG has gotten massively popular since its release, and Marvel was happy to announce some new additions to the game, including the new forms of the Phoenix Five, a group of five well known superheroes who were changed by the Phoenix Force in the current Avengers Vs. X-Men crossover. While Namor will be the only one of the Phoenix Five not included, he will be replaced by an unknown character that will be revealed throughout the AvX-related missions that will be added to the game. Cyclops and Colossus will be given new uniforms and abilities most likely, and the additions of Emma Frost and Magik will also be included in the game. The game will also be available on, eliminating the need for a Facebook account to play it.

Also brought up was the upcoming massively multiplayer online game Marvel Heroes, including a trailer of a newly announce character, the Black Panther. More characters are sure to be announced soon, and Marvel made sure to stress that this game will be entirely free to play, from beginning to end.

The next announcement was for the Wii U/Xbox Kinect game Avengers: Battle For Earth, the motion based fighting game that will feature some of the most popular heroes in the Marvel Universe.  A trailer was shown for that as well, with a surprise twist at the end that Marvel Comics fans will surely be excited about. This game is based on the Secret Invasion storyline, which means a certain group of characters will also be included in the game, which is set for a Fall 2012 release.

The last announcement was originally scheduled to be about the upcoming game from High Moon Studios (makers of the last three Transformers games, Transformers: War For Cybertron, Transformers: Dark Of The Moon and Transformers: Fall Of Cybertron), focused on the most popular monkey assassin in the Marvel Universe (probably the only one, as well), Hit Monkey. That was the plan. However, there was a scheduling change, as the Merc With A Mouth, Deadpool, busted in and took over the entire panel, as well as High Moon itself, according to him. The person playing the Regenerating Degenerate was as hilarious as the character himself, and after a lot of posturing, yelling at people (and chairs) and generally being the annoying jerk he is, announced that the Hit Monkey game was just a ploy for a different game, featuring the Crimson Comedian himself, Deadpool! There was a trailer released for this as well, along with some more posturing (and telling both Hit Monkey and Wolverine to suck it) by Deadpool followed by his exit.

The Marvel Video Games panel was exciting, especially with the way they revealed the Deadpool game, and hopefully, this will only be the latest in a long line of titles comic from Marvel in the gaming world.
