The whole world of “free-to-play” gaming is expanding at an interesting rate. The concept is, in and of itself, sound; you entice players to get into a game by giving them access to the “full” (yes, I put full in quotes) game and get them hooked enough to spend real money in game to receive certain perks and upgrades. It is an interesting twist on marketing for games and has shown a recent uptick in popularity, helping with a lot of the backlash over most larger games using the endless post-release DLC business model to squeeze more money out of gamers. Sony Online Entertainment is releasing the long-awaited follow-up to PlanetSide, PlanestSide 2 at some point in the near future, much to the joy of gamers. In fact, interested gamers can sign up for the beta right now.
The people at SOE have put out a fully CGI trailer for the upcoming game and it definitely errs on the side of epic. If this trailer is any indication, PlanetSide 2 will definitely be a game that is a must-play for fans of online shooters, especially with it being free. While they will offer in-game purchases, they will not be solely to make the player more powerful. Instead, the purchases are items that can be attained through the natural leveling up process, providing a shortcut for those looking to gain an early advantage and plunk down a few dollars.
Eager gamers can head to Planetside2.com right now and register for the Beta, and should of course marvel at this awesome new trailer.
