Sony Computer Entertainment Acquires Gaikai

Posted on July 2, 2012 AT 07:21pm

Sony Computer Entertainment has bought the services of one of the leading developers in the next revolution of gaming. For a whopping $380 million, Gaikai is now a part of the Sony family. This technology could eventually spell the end of console gaming, with the cloud taking over the duties of physical hardware. Not likely to happen for several years, perhaps one or more console generations, but cloud gaming could be the next wave of gaming technology.

A definitive deal was struck to buy the company, which specializes in cloud gaming, using the popular system to not only save data, but allow gamers to play their favorite titles without the use of a console. While the technology isn’t completely ready for consumer use as of yet, demonstrations have shown the potential  of cloud gaming, allowing for incredibly fast download times, large libraries and no-hassle storage, without sacrificing visual or audio quality.

The deal is not final, as of yet, as it has to go through the customary closing procedures, but this acquisition could be huge for Sony, who plan to use this innovative technology to further progress the next generations of consoles and beyond. This rapidly growing industry, now harnessed by Sony, could mean a new wave of popularity for Sony, whose release of the landmark Playstation 3 console have already made it one of the largest technology companies in the world.

This deal cost Sony quite a bit, but the potential is likely worth the financial risk. Look out for more information on this deal, and the development of cloud gaming in the near future.
