Sony Sells over 525K PS3s and 160K Vitas During Black Friday

Posted on November 30, 2012 AT 02:21pm

Nintendo has reportedly sold over 400,000 Wii U units during the console’s launch week, and the numbers will probably get higher with the launches in other regions over the course of the next week (currently still only available in NA, not even JP has it yet at time of writing). In an attempt at an ego boost, Microsoft announced a few days ago they moved over double the Wii U numbers with their Xbox 360, selling over 750,000 units last week. But Sony was more then happy to announce they sold, as predicted, thousands of PS3s, more then 525,000. And, after all the bad press the Vita has been getting lately, they still sold over 160,000 units on Black Friday.

Sony also noted that bundle sales went up over 15% on Black Friday, increasing the total sales overall of the PS3 console, peripherals and software by 9% on a year-over-year basis. The most popular bundle was the Ultimate PlayStation Value Bundle which came with a 250GB PS3, Uncharted Dual Pack and inFAMOUS Collection for $199 MSRP.

As for the Vita, the most popular bundle was the Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation bundle, also $199 MSRP and sold out nationwide in several retailers. Also, despite all the horrendous reviews and complaints from players and critics the world over, the Call of Duty Black Ops: Declassified bundle still sold out in major retailers as did the much more liked Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes bundle, both priced at $199 MSRP.

Jack Tretton, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, said this on his companies sales, “We’re very pleased with the Black Friday sales results, especially the incredible reception for the PS3 and PS Vita bundles. The demand was very strong which quickly depleted our inventory across retailers nationwide. The PlayStation brand generated significant revenue and year-over-year growth at retail because of our focus on what gamers love most in combining amazing hardware with great games and digital entertainment.”

Sony is not only doing well in hardware sales, but download sales as well, reporting a 259% increase in subscriptions to its Playstation Plus service, in comparison to last year’s Black Friday period. Also, since the introduction of the Instant Game Collection earlier this year, Sony has reported a 95% increase in customer satisfaction ratings.
