Already popular for its action oriented combat and beautiful world, En Masse’s TERA now becomes TERA: Rising as the game goes free to play today, with the patch ready for download and the servers go live at 7am PST (10am EST). Three levels are implemented to give players a fair chance of playing the game, and paying only gives you extra things that don’t give you an advantage over others in PvE and PvP. Personally, as a Founder (someone who had the game already), the benefits are as good as if I was already paying, though some of the extra perks for being an Elite are nice (mostly cosmetic items). For those who haven’t tried TERA out, this is the time to do so.
From the front page of their site, “TERA will be free. No level, time, or content restrictions. Our philosophy is to add to what we already offer instead of restricting existing content. We’ve added an in-game shop where players can choose to buy costumes, mounts, and consumables, but the core of the game will be 100% free.” I think this is a step in the correct path of how a free to play should be handled and not have one that strips the core game and mechanics (I’m looking at you Old Republic) away from the player.
Anyone with a curious notion, you’ll find me on Celestial Hills, playing one of my main alts.
