If there’s one thing about the geeks, gamers, and nerds alike is that we all love our music. We have playlists upon playlists of music. We have music for every kind of mood and music for anything we do. With the arrival of geek being chic, music has been created for our ever-growing niche. There are even whole genres of music dedicated to certain fandoms. Generally, this type of music is called filk, but depending on the fandom can have a range of other names. An example would be that Harry Potter fans perform Wizrock. I’m not going to branch out into all that is nerdcore or filk with this list. If I did that, this list would be going on forever.
I am always interested in finding more awesome geek music to add to my collection. If you have any suggestions, feel free to leave them below.
10. “Ulduar” – MadCowSummer
It took those World of Warcraft video makers awhile to come up with just the right anthem. I was an avid World of Warcraft player for around five years from vanilla straight on through to Wrath of the Lich King. I think MadCowSummer captured everything about playing WoW with this song.
9. “Harry Potter Meets Metal” – 331Erock
Eric Calderone is someone who I have been following on YouTube for quite some time. His videos are some that I can watch over and over again. He takes requests (most usually geek related) and transcribes the music into metal. His catalog of covers is rather vast by now, but there’s nothing better than hearing your favorite theme metalized.
8. “Do You Want To Date My Avatar?” – The Guild
This song is just plain fun. The cast of The Guild is always finding creative ways to promote their show, and this song (among others) is no different. If you have yet to watch The Guild, I have no idea what you are waiting for. Check out what brought Felicia Day to the forefront of geekdom.
7. “Nrrrd Grrrl” – MC Chris
Geeks have those friends that just don’t get it. Our references go over their head, and they’d be appalled at the amount of video game lore books that we own. A well placed quotation of Firefly or Star Wars is just lost on them.
6. “Roll a D6″ – Connor Anderson and Zac Smith
If there is one thing that I know about geeks, it is that we all have played some kind of tabletop roleplaying game. Be it – Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, or the D20 Star Wars RPG. It must be said that it was the Stars Wars game for me, and I was an Ewok Jedi just because I could.
5. “Code Monkey” – Jonathan Coulton
We all have those friends. The ones that have to have the latest and greatest upgrades to their computers as soon as they come out. Those guys or gals that seem to speak in a foreign language because all they do is code. We won’t hesitate to call them when we have a technical issue, though.
4. “White & Nerdy” - Weird Al Yankovic
Weird Al can easily be dubbed the godfather of geek music. He has been doing it before most of this current generation was born, and hasn’t slowed down a bit. I’m sure you can name off a few people who could take “White & Nerdy” as their theme song, I know I can.
3. “G33K & G4M3R Girls” – Team Unicorn
I love this song. It is an anthem for all geek, gamer and nerdy girls covering everything from sci-fi to gaming to roleplaying games. Not to mention, cameos like crazy – Stan Lee, Katee Sackhoff, and Seth Green to name a few. There is only one thing that grinds my gears. There is absolutely no reason for the girls to be almost completely nude, save for precariously placed books or controllers. I have played this song for my ten-year old niece who loves to game and is starting to read comics. I won’t be able to show her the video for at least another five years.
2. “The Ballad of Serenity” – The Intro to Firefly
If you call yourself a geek and don’t know all the words to the theme song from Firefly, please turn in your card and leave quickly.
1. “All Along the Watchtower” covered by Bear McCreary and the Battlestar Galactica Orchestra
I know this one looks funny amongst all of these other songs, but hear me out. I am a hugeBattlestar Galactica fan. Starbuck is my favorite character, and I would be less of a geek if Battlestar were not in my life. This is my ultimate geek/sci-fi anthem.
