The time for the ultra secret mode for Darksiders II has come, and those who attended the Darksiders II Community Summit finally get the chance to talk about it. While everyone got a chance to play it, there was an oath of silence taken for the game mode until THQ themselves were able to make the announcement.
The new mode, which unlocks in portions throughout the play-through of Darksiders II (and will only be fully available after getting through at least a portion of a ‘New Game +’ is called “The Crucible”, and focuses on the combat side of the game. This one hundred wave onslaught of enemies is not only challenging, but incredibly fun, putting the players combat skills to the test after nearly every wave.
Death is only one person (well, being), but the enemies come non-stop, with breaks every twenty-five waves. Then comes the choice: Either play on and risk losing it all (when Death is defeated, the mode starts again from Wave 1), or duck out early and claim the prize that awaits. This choice is a difficult one, but for those who love the combat aspect of the game (everyone should), the chance to complete all one hundred waves is a tough opportunity to pass up.
Every move at Death’s disposal will not only be recommended, but is nearly essential. As is giving your Death the best available abilities, such as added critical hit percentages, health and wrath regeneration, and the like. Harbinger and Necromancer abilities are also crucial, giving yourself a greater chance to get through the hordes of enemies that have no other motive that to destroy Death.
The Crucible is exhausting, exhilarating, and a wonderful challenge. Getting to level 100 is an exercise in not only commitment, but in strategy. Being properly equipped is the difference between life and death (pun not intended), and even that may not be enough. After getting to Wave 75 before falling, the challenge of The Crucible is not one to be taken lightly.
This all-or nothing combat mode is a blast, with the quick, furious strikes of Death and his almost infinite combos on full display. What happens when Wave 100 is beaten? Find out soon, when Darksiders II releases on August 14th.
