The Hobbit WILL Be a Trilogy

Peter Jackson, director of the award-winning The Lord of the Rings series, has just announced that his upcoming foray into Middle-earth, The Hobbit, will become a trilogy. The third installment will release in 2014.

In the Note on his official Facebook page, Jackson describes sitting down to have a look at the current the state of the first film and a large chunk of the second. Jackson, as well as producers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, loved how the story came together and how the cast brought the characters to life.  ”All of which gave rise to a simple question: do we take this chance to tell more of the tale?” said Jackson. “And the answer from our perspective as the filmmakers, and as fans, was an unreserved ‘yes.’” The team wants to expand on the story for the entire world based on the appendices in The Lord of the Rings and the rich story of The Hobbit.

As a Tolkien geek, I am excited for this expansion and for the movies themselves. My heart hopes for some love to be given to Tom Bombadil. Also, in case you missed it last week, here is Peter Jackson’s video blog of his experience at San Diego Comic Con and the footage that those in attendance at The Hobbit panel got to see.
