The Numbers Behind Kickstarter

Posted on June 12, 2012 AT 09:59pm

We’ve always known that kickstarter was a bit of a gamble, until now we never knew just how much of one. A recently produced infographic created by Appsblogger, showed just how off the mark we have been about getting an indie game funded through kickstarter.

As of June 2, 2012, $214,558,344 was pledged across 2,974, 842 backers in total across all of kickstarter. In the games category, only 43 percent of projects were successfully funded, with $22.7 million being raised for the projects. This is between 1,729 projects over the Games category, ranking only seventh in the amount of projects on the site.

The good news is that the Games category takes a strong third place when it comes to total backers. 499,562 people have backed a gaming kickstarter project, a number that makes me rather proud to call myself a gamer. This also means that the backer-to-project ratio is among the highest with 288 backers per project in our category, only beaten out by the film and music categories.

Successful projects averaged $5,487 per pledge, while failed projects averaged $16,365 per pledge. What this means is that those looking to launch Kickstarter projects should aim for a larger number of small donations instead of hoping that a few large backers can save you.

The good news is that you have a far better chance of being fully funded on kickstarter than any other gamble. The key is still to present yourself and your IP in an interesting and professional fashion.
