The Walking Dead: Long Road Ahead Review [PS3]

Posted on August 29, 2012 AT 04:31pm

The Walking Dead Episode 3 has finally been released and I know I was eager to get back into Lee’s story.

Long Road Ahead starts off with the group still at the motel and still arguing about what their next move is. Do they stay or do they go? Circumstances make the decision for them and they hit the road. This episode has it all; traitors, conspiracy, zombies, and of course the need for quick decisions.

Again, how the story plays out depends on what you did in the previous episodes, or if you are just starting with Long Road Ahead, it will offer the option to play the story based on the popular decisions made in the previous two episodes. This story is going to hurt. Honestly, it’s extremely tense and emotional. It’s heart wrenching. You will find your mouth agape and moments when every decision feels wrong. You are going to agonize over every little thing. The story is truly compelling.

Telltale really has hit a home run with this one. I am still in love with the graphics and artistry of the series. It’s just like being drawn into your favorite graphic novel and completely gorgeous. I cannot say enough about how perfect the style is for the story.

Players will have to use the action options more in the episode and most likely you will die once or twice. Sorry, but you just have to get quicker with the controls. There is still some point-and-click to do but you will notice a significant increase in the action. Being able to snap that right thumbstick around on the fly is going to be extremely handy.

My one regret, at one point in the game I had a game breaking programming issue. I walked out of a door, I won’t say where because I don’t want to ruin the story for you, but as soon as I walked out of that door, the screen started spinning and showing me the sky as if I were under the map. The only thing I could do was move the thumbsticks until I was able to go back through the door I came out of, effectively stopping my ability to continue the story. I finally had to quit and then reload my game. It worked after that so it wasn’t such a terrible error that I had to restart completely but it was still annoying.

Other than that, this game is still living up to the original episode. My fear with The Walking Dead being an episodic game was that it would end up feeling disjointed or that the story would start to weaken. It has not happened and I know I am looking forward to episode 4. I wish it was not such a long wait.

If you have not purchased The Walking Dead, do it. Now. No really. Give them your money! I’d recommend getting the season pass. You will have instant access to the three released episodes and you won’t miss the next two when they are finally released.

The Good: Zombies, compelling story, awesome gameplay

The Bad: Minor programming issues

The Ugly: Nothing can be ugly if there are zombies

Score: 9.9/10
