Sometimes I look at the modern state of professional wrestling and a part of my childhood gets confused. For someone that grew up on professional wrestling, I, like many others, felt like the industry died off when WCW closed its doors and no true viable alternative emerged. This isn’t to say that WWE’s product was entirely unpalatable at times, because it is, but nothing has stepped in to replace the twenty minute free television matches or the sense of the “old school” living on. If you would have told me in 2002 when I was watching CM Punk do top rope Pedigrees in Ring of Honor that he would in ten years time be the WWE Champion and one of the last bastions of that old school professional wrestling, I would have balked. Yet, here we are and I can’t complain.
WWE ‘13, the next in the line of popular WWE videogames from THQ, following in the tradition of the Smackdown, Smackdown vs. Raw and now yearly WWE ’1X games. This one promises new additions and features much like it does every year, as well as an improved roster. It is safe to say that if you are a fan of these games, you’ll be buying this game no matter what, because you buy them every year. It’s alright, I own most of them as well. But if you are on the fence and happen to be one of those people who sees CM Punk and Daniel Bryan (formerly known as Bryan Danielson) as some of the top names in modern WWE and smile, THQ has yet another cool reason for you to pre-order this game.
CM Punk is truly one of those guys that grew up watching pro wrestling and is still to this day a fan of everything pro wrestling was in its heyday. I mean, I’ve seen video of him in his tour bus holding a stack of burned DVDs and I know exactly where they came from, as I’ve bought those same DVDs from the same guy. So when CM Punk brought up the Good Humor WWF ice cream bars from the past, it was funny and spoke to the alienated, older fans. He even had a t-shirt made of it, and if you pre-order the game now from Gamestop or EB Games, your in-game CM Punk can wear that shirt and you can relive Punk’s rebellion against the machine.
WWE ‘13 comes out on October 30th in the United States for the Xbox 360, Playsation 3 and Wii.
