E3 2012: THQ Sells UFC Rights To EA Sports
Posted on June 4, 2012 AT 02:37pm
In what was a shocking, yet understandable announcement considering the times, UFC is now going to be produced by EA Sports. Announced during the EA press event, the new multi-year, multi-product partnership will give EA the exclusive rights to develop UFC video games.
“We’re thrilled to begin a long-term partnership that will bring fans incredibly authentic, and deeply connected, UFC videogames,” said Andrew Wilson, EVP and Head of EA SPORTS. “UFC has become a global powerhouse because they have the world’s best fighters, competing in the world’s best mixed martial arts events. We share UFC’s passion for the sport, and we look forward to capturing all of the intensity and excitement of the action with unique new game experiences across a range of platforms.”
THQ CEO Brian Farrell did have to something to say about UFC’s departure from THQ in the press release which you can find below. It’s also been uncovered that THQ sold the rights of UFC to EA Sports for an “undisclosed cash payment”.
“We’ve relished our relationship with UFC over the last several years and believe that the UFC gaming brand is in great shape. THQ’s more focused strategy moving forward meant that transferring the license to EA made sense to all parties,” said THQ CEO Brian Farrell. “We’d like to thank the UFC for their great support and partnership and wish EA all the best moving forward.”
Most of the gaming world is aware of the financial troubles THQ is currently in and seeing UFC going to EA Sports was a bit of a shock to me but not a full surprise as one way or another it was going to happen. This is going to be the start of a new direction for the UFC and EA Sports. Let’s just hope the WWE franchise stays where it is.
