Unity Support Announced for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8
Posted on August 23, 2012 AT 09:35pm
Just a few weeks ago, I posted an article about how developers and creators of game engines need to start considering Windows Phone as a viable platform. Unity announced today that it has done just that. Unity Tech’s CEO, David Helgason, previously had said that Windows Phone 7 would not be receiving Unity support because the environment was too closed. With the forthcoming Windows Phone 8, Microsoft has opened up quite a bit.
“Our mission at Unity has always been to provide solutions for developers to effortlessly bring their work to as many different platforms as possible,” Helgason said.
“The Unity community has been asking for access to Windows Phones and have been eagerly anticipating the release of Windows 8. We’re happy to announce that we will support both.”
According to their statistics, 53% of mobile game developers now use Unity, so this can do nothing but good for the Windows Phone platform. As a user of the OS, I am ecstatic that a company with so much pull has made such a move. One can only hope that other companies suit!
