WATCH_DOGS Breaches Privacy? Dotconnexion Event Cancellation E-mail Throws Users Into Fits
Posted on June 28, 2012 AT 09:09pm
If you have been following Watch_Dogs, you will also be familiar with the ‘Dotconnexion’ event that was occuring during the live demo of the game during E3. During said demo, the founder of the event–Joseph Demarco–was assassinated by Aiden Pierce. But also, there was a ridiculously conspicuous waiter wandering the floor of Dotconnexion with a very large box on his head. There was a QR code on that box, so it’s certain that hundreds of onlookers were scrambling to get their phones out before it was gone.
If you managed to be lucky enough to scan in this code, it would take you to the ‘official’ homepage for Dotconnexion. On that site, you could learn about Dotconnexion, and register via e-mail to be notified when tickets were available for purchase.
Earlier today, I received the email below.
Hi,
It is with great regret that we inform you that Joseph Demarco passed away in a tragic, yet unexplained accident. Being one of the most important philanthropists in the local digital art scene, his demise has left a deep void in the community. Out of respect for his friends and family, the dotconnexion exhibition will be cancelled.
Sincerely yours,
The dotconnexion Team

What’s even more interesting about it is… I can see the e-mail addresses of EVERY SINGLE PERSON ON THE DISTRIBUTION LIST, which amounts to nearly 500 people. Since the game itself is about technology and internet privacy, I suspect that this was a very deliberate move on the part of UbiSoft. Many of the people who received the e-mail are VERY upset about this ‘breach of privacy’ and the reply all button got heavy usage. I’m thinking that everyone on this list have just become pawns in what is likely something much bigger. An ARG, perhaps?
You win this round, Ubi.
But… we’re watching you. Or are you watching us?
