What Is Oculus Rift?

Kickstarter is continuing to attract some of the most interesting and innovative new ideas and offer anyone in the world the chance to help make them a reality. The newest project that begun today and is already exploding, is the ‘Oculus Rift’. Oculus the company behind the Rift claim to have created ‘the first truly immersive virtual reality headset for video games’. That’s quite a claim but they aren’t the only people who are believers in the project. The Kickstarter video pitch includes some very high profile names from the gaming industry including Gabe Newell, Cliff Bleszinski and John Carmack, who saw the product and reached out to Oculus himself.

Palmer Luckey, the founder of Oculus is hugely interested in virtual reality technology but is dissatisfied with what is currently on offer. He founded his company in order to change that and believes what sets the Rift apart is ‘immersive stereoscopic 3D rendering, a massive field of view and ultra low latency head tracking’. This is definitely another very exciting Kickstarter project that’ll be one to watch over the coming months, especially considering the support of several industry veterans, however it is important to always remain skeptical and understand what you will receive in return for your financial backing.

Oculus have certainly made a splash and are already well on their way to achieving their financial goal of $250, 000. As of this writing the current amount pledged is $115, 265 with 400 backers. If you want to get your hands on the development kit for the Oculus Rift, it will cost you at least $275 for an ‘Unassembled Rift Prototype Kit including Doom 3 BFG’ or you can spend an extra $25 and get a complete early Rift Development Kit for $300.
