WTF Wednesday: Bubba Ho-Tep [Movie]

By

Elvis, a black John F. Kennedy, a cowboy mummy, and an old folks home. This is Bubba Ho-Tep.

I love me some cheesy horror films, but this one is something… very different. Bubba Ho-Tep follows Elvis Presley [played outstandingly by Bruce Campbell], who now resides at the Shady Rest Retirement Home. When Elvis was younger, he eventually tired of his fame and switched places with Elvis impersonator Sebastian Haff. Elvis earned a living impersonating himself until a hip injury causes an infection and throws him into a coma. Twenty years later, he calls Shady Rest his home. Does he miss the old days of being famous? No, he instead laments the loss of his ability to get an erection. This doesn’t really sound like we’re winding up toward a horror film, I know.

He has but one friend at Shady Rest, the mysterious Jack [played by Ossie Davis], who claims to be John F. Kennedy. This claim seems absurd, as that Jack is black [no, not Jack Black, that's another weirdo for another Wednesday. Or not.]. Jack says that after the attempted assassination, he was died black to hide his identity. Interestingly, he does have what appears to be a gunshot wound right where JFK was struck in the back of the head. It’s never made clear how much of what Jack says is true, but he’s quite certain of it all himself.

Nearby, a mummy that was stolen from a museum tour comes back to life and dons a cowboy hat. The mummy awakens near Shady Rest and opts to feast upon the residents of the home. Elvis and Jack must come up with a plan to stop him before Shady Rest Retirement Home becomes a final rest home.

The concept is ridiculous, but the acting is top-notch [for a B movie] and oddly poignant for a tale about two apparently crazy elderly men and a mummy with a taste for souls. If the weird plot doesn’t grab you, watch it to see what, in my opinion, is one of the best Elvis impersonations ever to grace the screen, Silver or otherwise.

Check out the trailer below! If you like it, check out the full movie, which you can find in many a bargain bin, as well as on Netflix.

Bryan Todd [aka DieselBT] -- This is where I'm supposed to say something clever about myself. Let's pretend I did, and it conveniently mentions all of my top interests, such as anime, video games, crazy gadgets, electronic music, voice acting, sound editing, and countless other ridiculously fascinating topics. I also like to write stuff about things, which is why I'm here.

...That, and I like your shirt.
