Imagine if the only video game available based on your favorite sport was more arcade-like than a simulation. Instead of Madden you get NFL Blitz or instead of Top Spin you only have Mario Tennis. For me, the sport is Roller Derby (yes, roller derby is still around and growing in popularity every season) and the game is Jam City Rollergirls for the Wii.
For those who don’t know, Roller Derby is basically a brutal race on an oval track between two teams. A jammer from each attempts to make their way through a group of four blockers from each team that make up the pack. After the first pass through the pack the jammer earns a point for every opposing blocker they pass. Simple….fast-paced……fun. Jam City Rollergirls gets the basic feel of roller derby right but adds in so much extra, unnecessary stuff that the final product feels more like a Mario Kart clone than an accurate depiction of an already misunderstood sport.
There are Jammers and Blockers and the player earns points by passing other skaters, but there are also speed pads to hit and powerups to grab to help the player plow through opposing blockers. Players can also jump off ramps and race on courses that are much more whimsical and cartoony than a typical derby track (there’s one track where you have to watch out for cows….COWS I SAY!!!!). There is fun to be had so if you have a Wii then be sure to check out Jam City Rollergirls, but as a derby fan (and referee in training) will some developer PLEASE make a realistic roller derby game?!
