BOSTON FIG 2013 | 2D Tower Defense Very Anti-”Party”

Tower defenses have come and gone, with some being very memorable and others, well, not so much. Gorilla Tactics is betting on the former for their title King Randall’s Party, a greedy little gem filled with MacGyver-like weaponry.

The 2D game is set up similar to that of Terraria, where you have to keep your king from taking his gold so he can spend it all on frivolously. As your character, the king’s treasurer, is not the wisest when it comes to weapons, so you’ll need to improvise with the likes of quill launchers and pillow-stuffed booby traps. You’ll also have to build giant walls and other hinderances to keep the king’s men from marching in and taking all of the royal treasure.

During my play-through I had the treasurer set-up quill launchers and hot oil traps to keep the enemies at bay, as well as build walls to slow them down. Some of the smaller knights were easier to keep from getting in, but once one of the more brutish guardsmen come a-running in that’s when you need to be on your toes. You yourself cannot attack, so you need to set up as many traps and weaponry as you can fit in your areas.

While the game is still in its early stages King Randall’s Party does seem to have a lot of uniqueness for a tower defense game. Currently it’s being pushed on Kickstarter, and hopes to raise $21,000 to make it all happen. The more that’s raised, though, the bigger the game will become. As of now it’s being pushed for PC sometime in 2014, with ports to Mac and Linux being a possibility. An alpha build for King Randall’s Party is available for free to download if you’d like to see what all the fuss is about, so if you’re not sure if you want to put money towards it then this is the best way to make absolutely sure.
