E3 2013 | “Forza Motorsport 5″ VS “Driveclub”

Two racing games, two console-exclusives, lots of cars in-between. At E3 this year both Microsoft and Sony showed off their latest forays onto the road: the Xbox One-exclusive Forza Motorsport 5 and the PS4-exclusive Driveclub. Which of these two felt better behind the wheel?

In the E3 demo Driveclub featured two vehicles to try out: The McLaren 12c and the Hennesey Venom GT. For my tryout I decided to give the McLaren 12c a go, seeing as it was the more easier to control. For the race itself it had me go up against one of the other players around me for various tasks, whether it was for speed, lap, or drifting points. Forza Motorsport 5, on the other hand, had six vehicles to demo, but it was their McLaren that I wanted to try out: the $3.5 million McLaren P1, one of the rarest cars in the world right now. However for their demo I was only given one lap to try out on their course, meaning that while it had more vehicles to drive it didn’t give you as much time to really jump in and try out many of their modes like Driveclub had.

Graphically both games look stunning, with every attention to detail from the shine of the vehicles to every dent and scratch I put on it after the race was over. It’s very difficult to say which of the two looked the more realistic, but I do have to give it to Forza Motorsport 5 for creating a lighting setup that looks the most authentic than what I saw in Driveclub. In all honesty I was a tad disappointed with Driveclub, as its trailer made the cars look so real that I couldn’t tell they were CGI, but then again both titles are still being cranked out so we’ll have to see how the graphics look come release date.

Finally there’s the control aspect. As Driveclub is more leaning towards a simulator handling the McLaren 12c was a bit of a challenge. I found myself slamming at every curve, and I had trouble with keeping my vehicle on the road. I’m normally not that good with simulators, as those types of racing games seem better suited for wheel peripherals, which was why my time with Forza Motorsport 5 was far better. I was given the chance to play the game using the Thrustmaster simulator, and with being able to set the driving style and difficulty to a more comfortable setting (in my case, more arcade-influenced) I was speeding along the road with great style and ease.

In the end, while my time with Driveclub was a lot longer it wasn’t quite as much fun as it was with Forza Motorsport 5. Granted my opinion will probably be different from others who went pedal-to-the-metal with both titles (especially since I played both games at different settings), but from my personal experience I felt more of a rush with Microsoft’s latest in their franchise than I did with what will probably be Sony’s first in a new driving series. Things can change from now to November, though, as both Driveclub and Forza Motorsport 5 will launch alongside their respective consoles that month. Once those treads have worn themselves down, and the last lap nears its end, we’ll truly know which of these two will cross the finish line first.
