This year the premiere fantasy trading card game, I’m of course talking about Magic: The Gathering, invites you to “ignite your spark” with the latest version of their digital game Magic: The Gathering – Duels of the Planeswalkers 2014. The game features a slew of new features and improvements over previous entries and an even more exciting story to follow. With new modes, cards and platforms to play on, this is one you’re not going to want to miss.
The game starts with you being challenged by planeswalker Chandra Nalaar and immediately throws you in a duel. After offering her a slice of humble pie, she admits she’s underestimated you and invites you to help her on her quest for vengeance. This new story takes you through several different planes, including: Shandalar, Ravnica, Alara, Innistrad and Zendikar. The dedication to providing a great story for the single-player campaign is plainly evident as cutscenes guide you through the story at various points throughout the game.
One of the most exciting new features in this version of the game is the brand new sealed play mode. This introduces deck building for the first time in the history of the Duels of the Planeswalkers series. When you launch into this mode, you get a series of booster packs with random cards in them which you can then manually choose from to craft your perfect deck. If you’re not comfortable with building a deck, but you still want the experience of playing with random cards, you can use the auto-build feature and the computer will thoughtfully put together a winning deck for you. You can also either choose the land you have in your deck or have it auto-flow that in there as well. Once you have your new deck put together, the game presents you with a brand new campaign specifically for your custom-built deck. What’s great about this feature is that it offers the thrill of building a brand new deck to both experienced and new players.
Remember the slivers you used to play with in your deck? This game introduces a brand new form of slivers that not only have a new look, but some new tricks up their sleeves. The creatures now have an updated style that makes them more humanoid-looking than before. The drawback of the older kind of slivers was that their effects applied across the entire battlefield, but with this new type, you get their benefits all to yourself. This adds a whole new dynamic and makes them a great commodity to have inside your deck.
Wizards of the Coast very clearly cares about their community and they’ve also made several updates to the game based on player feedback. The menus have been simplified so they’re easier to navigate through. When you have a ton of creatures that you want to unleash upon your enemies, you can now use the “attack with all” feature to save from having to select everything individually. For the first time as well, the Duels of the Planeswalkers series, the game is going to be coming to the Android platform, which brings the amount of platforms the game is playable on up to five. This means, no matter what platform your preference is, you can enjoy some Magic: The Gathering action.
With an awesome new story, some great community-requested features and some great new modes this looks to be an exciting next release in the Duels of the Planeswalkers series. Whether your an advanced player, brand new to the series or looking to get back into it, this’ll be the one to pick up on your platform of choice. Look for it on June 26th for PS3, Xbox 360, Steam, iOS and Android.
