E3 2013 | Mario Gets His Feline On In “3D World”

Posted on June 12, 2013 AT 09:35am

People enjoyed New Super Mario Bros. U, but not as much as they would’ve wanted a true 3D Mario title in the vein of Galaxy and Sunshine. Fortunately our prayers have been answered with the announcement of Super Mario 3D World, a four-player co-op platformer that brings a few new things to the Mario franchise.

Super Mario 3D World lets you control Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Toad as you go from level-to-level in a setup similar to 3DS’s Super Mario 3D Land. Co-op players can help (or hinder if they’re jerks) their friends throughout the levels, whether it’s reaching higher areas or giving as much of an extra hand to defeat Goombas and various bosses. There are even some multiplayer aspects where you have to both work together in order to reach a level. One example of this teamwork-based world came in Level 1-5, where you and your friends ride a new aquatic-based Yoshi along the river as you collect coins, avoid obstacles, and time long jumps appropriately.

New to Super Mario 3D World is the cat power-up, which can be obtained when you collect a bell from the mystery box. The cat power-up gives you the abilities of wall-climbing, pouncing, and swiping your opponents. This came in handy in Levels 2-1 and 4-2, where you need to reach higher places in order to get to the flag at the end of the level. One cool aspect of the cat power-up is that if you have it when you reach the flag, your character will climb up to the top and grab you an extra life.

One of the levels I also got to check out was a peek at what to expect of the boss battles. At the end of World 4 you will face off against a multi-headed serpent, whose biggest head you need to pound on three times (the usual number in the Mario realm) in order to defeat. You will need to jump on top of the snake heads with plates in order to reach the highest peak to perform the ground pound. It gets wicked tricky when you accidentally jump on a snake with a broken plate, as he will attack you and take away your current power-ups. It’s a very tough level, so much in fact that the person I was playing with wound up doing all the work and I was stuck as a mini-Luigi.

From the four levels I got to try out Super Mario 3D World is looking to be another home run in the Mario adventure realm. While it may not contain the open world feeling of Super Mario Galaxy it still feels like a good step in the right direction for an HD Mario title. Super Mario 3D World hits stores in December for the Wii U.
