E3 2013 Preview | The Calm Before the Storm

Posted on June 9, 2013 AT 05:00pm

E3 2013 What's Next

This year marks my 7th trip to Los Angeles to cover the E3 Expo for ESH, and it is already shaping up to be an exciting show.

In less than 24 hours we will know more about the new consoles from Microsoft (Xbox One) and Sony (PS4) – including MSRP’s, shipping dates, exclusive title releases, and much, much more. Not to be forgotten, or left out of the conversation is Nintendo, and what is sure to be an interesting – and crowd pleasing – line up of title announcements.

Today, is the calm before the storm – a brief period of time where I still have plenty of options of where to eat, the ease of moving about the show floor, and the luxury of taking my time to get to where I want to be. No crazed dashes for appointments I’m about to miss, or flurries of texts back and forth with an interviewee to change our meeting time. Just time to sit and think about what the next 4 days in L.A. will be like. So here’s what I came up with:

The Top 5 things I Want to See at E3 2013.

  1. The Last Guardian – If you are a regular listener to the ESH Cast weekly podcast, then you know that Amanda and I have been dying for more information about this game, ever since it was teased back in 2009. With a new, more powerful console looming, this years event makes the perfect stage for a re-introduction and launch date for this inventive TeamIco title.
  2. Mirrors Edge 2 – Teased by developer DICE, a followup to one of my more favorite female lead games announced this year would, in fact, make my day. I enjoyed the gameplay from Mirror’s Edge 1, and have been hoping for more in the series since finishing the first game. Please EA, don’t let me down.
  3. Watch_Dogs – If there was such a thing as a “drool-worthy” video game time, Dogs is it for me. I’m in love with the story, open world atmosphere, and think this will be a killer title for not only the current generation of game consoles, but the next generation as well.
  4. Call of Duty: Ghosts – The teaser trailers for this game caught my attention the moment I saw them. The last two CoD have completely impressed me, not only with the depth of storytelling but with stunning visuals as well. CoD: Black Ops 2 was one of the more emotionally stirring outings in the franchise for me, and Ghosts looks to follow in that vein.
  5. Improved Multi-Player Mechanics – While not a “tile” to look forward to, improved multiplayer mechanics for the next generation of gaming is a must for me. Microsoft has already share a little with us about the improved matchmaking options that will be available through their next console, but I am really hoping that they are not the only ones looking to improve and augment community play as we move forward. We may have moved out of the arcades and into our game rooms, but that doesn’t mean we don’t want to play together as a group, quickly and easily

So there you have it, my top 5 things I want to see at E3 this year. There are a lot more things on my list, and you can be sure that Team ESH will be publishing as many previews and reviews from the show as we possibly can, but we’d love to hear from you! Share your top 5′s in the comments below.
