E3 2014 | Finn & Jake Link To The Past In “Nameless Kingdom”

Posted on June 19, 2014 AT 09:40am

Adventure Time has always been a secret love letter to both RPGs and video games, the latter of which has been showcased well in Hey Ice King! Why’d You Steal Our Garbage?! and Explore the Dungeon Because I Don’t Know! For the next adventure of Jake the Dog and Finn the Human the duo are looking to expand their journey in the Land of Ooo through another very familiar perspective, as they embark to find The Secret of the Nameless Kingdom.

Like in Hey Ice King! the newest Adventure Time game takes inspiration from the Zelda Universe, only this time it’s A Link To The Past that’s used as its canvas. Finn takes the center stage in this adventure, as Jake is demoted to more of an inventory/secondary weapon role. According to the Little Orbit rep Lady Rainicorn is mad at Jake, so he must hide from her in order to help Finn on his journey. You explore dungeons, solve puzzles, and save princesses from the evils of the land. (My money is on the Ice King being a little lonely again, but we’ll have to see.) As you progress through the game you can level up and make Finn stronger so he can take on the tougher enemies that may roam the map.

During our hands-off demonstration I was shown one of the dungeons, where in order to reach the boss level you’ll have to solve a certain music-based puzzle. At first glance it would appear that a trial-and-error approach would be the only way to figure it out, but if you pay attention to the walls of the dungeon you may find yourself some clues that will be key to moving on. Once you do you’ll go against a group of enemies in the next room that throw projectiles one-by-one. Using Jake as a shield you can deflect the objects and how them hit the enemies back, whom can then be taken one-by-one with a good spanking.

It’s hard to really say how the The Secret of the Nameless Kingdom will play, but from watching the Little Orbit associate go at it those who are still familiar with A Link To The Past and (for a more recent title) A Link Between Worlds will have no problem jumping into the game whatsoever. From its role-playing mechanics to the familiar humor that we’ve come to expect from Pendleton Ward’s creation this game is shaping up to be a much better follow-up to Hey Ice King! rather than what WayForward did with Explore The Dungeon Because I Don’t Know!

Adventure Time: The Secret of the Nameless Kingdom is due for 3DS, Xbox 360, PS3, and PC this November. Now let’s cross our fingers that we can get a Bravest Warriors game next…
