What (I Think) You Should Watch This Anime Season- Pt. 3 (of 3)

Posted on November 21, 2012 AT 05:20pm

OK, OK! I have to admit that there were a few more anime on Crunchyroll that were streaming, but I really didn’t want to bother with them. Still, for anyone who’s reading this, I figured that you shouldn’t be deprived of such wonderful animation.

The Must Watch List

My Little Monster

This show is FUNNY!!! To think that I nearly avoided this show, a show that’s comedically right up my alley. Why pick a chicken for the image to represent this series? Maybe you should ask “Why is a chicken even in this episode??” Random is the name of the game when it comes to this show.  It’s a show about an unlikely pairing, like some comedy anime of this sort tend to be, but this one’s a bit different. Good student Shizuku is tasked with bringing homework to delinquent student, Haru. She has no idea what she’s in for.

While the whole show is funny, it’s obviously Haru’s show, and for great reason. When he’s not doing something crazy, he’s saying something crazy, and everyone else is basically at his mercy. Whatever impulse hits his brain, he just goes for it, and everyone who’s in the way is just at his mercy. When I say this show is funny, I don’t just mean that it’s above average in comparison to the typical corny anime comedy. I think that it’s a show that takes you off guard by his humor. Before you know it, you will be holding your sides, and I think anime needs more shows like My Little Monster.

On the Fence

This is a hard show to recommend. You can look at that awkward image above and remove all doubt  as to why.  Ebiten is an all female cast, about an astronomy club that’s struggling to survive. We have all your favorite female archetypes, the newest one being the Haruhi type, which is basically the genki girl with her pigtails in bows. Oh, and look, she has a helpless girl who is stripped down to her underwear for no reason!

So, ah, why am I not saying that this is easily avoidable? I think that within what is pretty much a by-the-numbers comedy show you have a premise that is interesting enough to carry it above most of the all-female shows that are simply hoping to sell dolls and figures of their characters. I think that it’s their attention to astronomy and their sentai show attitude that gives me a little hope for Ebiten.

Say I love You (Suki-tte Ii na yo)

There is probably no better looking romantic comedy this season than Say I Love You it looks better than most of the anime I have reviewed. I know that’s not the point of watching a show such as this, but it’s so appreciated. Besides it looking magnificent, the show is definitely worth watching. I am sticking it in the “maybe” category because I just don’t know if I have enough space for it with all I have added to my queues. Maybe once I *TEAR* finish watching the remaining episodes of Last Resort, I’ll jump back on this series.

Say I Love You is about a girl, Mei, who has retreated from the idea of having friendships or relationships with anyone else than her immediate family. One day, she encounters a boy, Yamato, who is very popular with everyone in the school, namely girls. He isn’t a bad guy, though. When Yamato sees her and learns her deal, it’s settled: this is the girl for him.

If you’re a big romance anime buff, I have to imagine that this show will score big in your book. Please don’t take my placement of this show as a slight against it.

Have you drunk your coffee yet? If you don’t do that before you watch this show, you might not be able to keep up! NO, the characters do not actually have gigantic bubble balloon heads in the show. The show is ridiculous, though, and that”s fine with me. It’s a show like Nichijou or Azumanga Daioh. I haven’t looked it up, but this is probably based on a 4 Koma (4 panel) manga.

This is a 2 minute series, so it’s over almost as quickly as it starts. So they have to compress a ton of humor in that tiny length. I don’t know if many people can take this kind of fast-forwarded comedy, and that’s why I don’t rate it higher.

Don’t Bother

Aoi Sekai no Chushin De (In the Center of the Blue World)

What happens after this image basically sums up what Aoi Sekai. From the start, from the opening song (that sounds like they got one of the male actors to sing) I was nervous. It also feels cheap. I don’t need a show to have a big budget, but I feel like Aoi Sekai might’ve had just enough money to make some scenes look better than others. Is this show in danger of getting into budget troubles?

Even if this show had a tremendous budget, that’s not the only issue that needs to be confronted. First issue? It’s not that well written. It’s a very simple show. Don’t expect any lines from this show to move you. Then you have the nudity issue. No, nudity is not the problem. The problem with the nudity is the ways in which characters become naked. It’s ridiculous! I guess people are starving for nipple-less boobs, and this show is ready to serve  ‘em up!

The only little strand of interest I have for this show is the fanservice. Fanservice, in the case of Aoi Sekai no Chushin De all involves video games, and video game characters. The story is based on the early days of the video game console wars: Nintendo Vs. Sega. So big game geeks could get a rush out of all the parody names piled up in this show, but do they want to stay for the lameness running circles around it?

Lychee Light Club

This was a bummer!  I had heard of Lychee once or twice in passing, and when I read about an anime adaptation, I was ready to watch a darkly humorous show. I am deflated. First of all, this is another short show, just a little bit longer than Teekyu. I don’t think this should be a short show. I have not read the manga, so I don’t know if a story wraps up as quickly as it does in the show, but I would’ve thought that this could sustain longer episodes. Maybe it’s for the better, because people are saying that the book is not like this, that it’s not only better, that it’s much more dark and explicit.

The story is about a group who have a Lychee fruit powered robot. Oh, and they’ve also stolen a girl. I still hold out hope for the manga being a good read, but I don’t want this comedic, chibi, cute take on it. It’s not all that funny to me.

So that’s it! It’s unfortunate that some titles weren’t distributed for US audiences (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, WHY? ) but I hope that you’ve found one of these anime to be worth watching. If you want to check out the other reviews, read parts (1) and (2).

If you love keeping up on geek news, you've come to the right guy.
