Upcoming first-person-survival-horror-comedy-shooter, Zombeer, Zombies & Beers, is all about the living dead and drinking some beers, but I had a few more questions. So after a few beers to chase away the zombie virus, I asked Carlos Fernandez, CEO of Moonbite Games, for a few extra details about the game. So let’s have a seat, drink some zombies and talk about beers… Or something to that effect.
-Where did you get the inspiration to have beer be the zombie virus cure?
Carlos Fernandez: In the real world of course.
One early morning, some time ago, I was in the subway watching people with zombie’s faces around me and thought: “these people really need a beer!”
At this point I started to write the first version of the gameplay: “zombification” versus “drinking beer” as an antidote.
-Tell me more about the zombie virus. Was it pretty recent in the game or has it been around for a while?
Fernandez: The virus appears in the middle of a university party. “K”, the protagonist, wakes up with a hangover in a mexican bar in front of the university.
Around him: everything is chaos, the pandemia has started!
Soon K discovers that he has been bitten by a zombie and that beer is the only way to keep the virus under control.
It seems to be a good deal.
-People seem to think there are a lot of zombie games out there, what makes Zombeer unique?
Fernandez: Yeah, maybe there are too many zombies walking around. But we have really wanted to develop a Zombie game for years… our friends even say that we are “infected”!
Our objective since the start of the Zombeer project is to propose a different point of view. Of course we don’t want to develop“just another zombie game”. That’s the reason why we’ve worked on creating exotic art and animation like our honney bunny zombie! We’re also proud of our crazy gameplay balance between beer and zombification.
Another important part of the game is the “acid humor”. Zombeer is an FPS with a lot of action and humour, probably the best reference is “Zombieland”.
-I love the videos you’ve released thus far. As a developer that also does animation, can we expect some awesome cutscenes?
Fernandez: Thanks! We love great cutscenes too! To make the best Zombeer experience, our animation department has also done an incredible job with the in-game animation.
Everything you can see in our trailers is in-game: environments, lighting and 3D rendering included.
-I’d love to hear more about “K”. Are there any details you can give me?
Fernandez: K is a “good guy” who loves drinking beer with friends. His girlfriend is a pretty girl, working in “Zombeer Company”.
He tries to find her but one zombie found her before and … well she’s still so sexy…
-What kinds of weapons will “K” have at his disposal to dispatch his undead foes?
Fernandez: You saw the first one in the “101 ways to kill a zombie” first trailer, hehe, that’s our special “melee weapon” version.
We will show you more soon, and I can tell you that we’re enjoying testing them.
-You mentioned pop culture references for the game. Any specific examples you can give me?
Fernandez: We love films and TV series like “From Dusk Till Dawn”, “Zombieland” or “Lost” and games like “Bioshock”, “Half Life” or “Dead Space”. People will find references in Zombeer, gags and influences from all of them and a lot more from beginning to end.
I want to thank Carlos Fernandez for taking the time to answer some of my questions about the upcoming game. For more information about the game, check out the official website. I also highly recommend checking out the videos on their YouTube channel. In the meantime, check out the new gameplay video below.
