MUSIC NEWS | Hunter Valentine Gives Listeners A Taste To “Conquer”
Posted on July 18, 2012 AT 09:00am
Toronto-bred and Brooklyn-based rockers (and stars of the current season of The Real L Word) Hunter Valentine are ready to recruit new listeners and reenlist their fans for their latest album, and they are looking to accomplish this with some big teasers.
Starting tomorrow (and every Thursday until they’ve given us a good-enough sample of what’s to come) Hunter Valentine will stream a new track from Collide and Conquer, due in stores this September. The album will be the first one to feature the two recent additions to the band: bassist Veronica “Vero” Sanchez (who joined the band last August) and guitarist/keyboardist Somer Bingham (who came into the group early this year).
The first single, entitled “This Bull Rides Tonight,” is very arena rock-based, and feels somewhat similar to what My Chemical Romance did for their 2010 album Danger Days. Vocalist/guitarist Kiyomi McCloskey sings softly into the listener’s ear, with a small trace of that growl of hers that made the previous album Lessons From The Late Night such a jaw-dropper. The lyrics speak loudly about moving onto the next stage of one’s relationship, with the themes of getting older and lovers refusing to change the things that make a person unique from one another. Drummer Laura Petracca pounds away at her drum kit à la Joshua Tree-era Larry Mullen, Jr., while Bingham’s organ echoes throughout the track. Sanchez keeps her wild side at bay, playing more somber bass lines with full attention to what the song conveys. It’s a solid track that treads in the same vein as previous tracks “A Youthful Existence” and the Impatient Romantic ditty “Van City.”
To preview this song (and other future tracks) be sure to check out the band’s official website every Thursday starting tomorrow. A full review of Collide and Conquer will be posted here in the not-so-distant future.
