PAX EAST 2013 | Hacking In A Different Sense In “Watch_Dogs”

One of this year’s most hotly-anticipated titles has to be Ubisoft’s Watch_Dogs, a game that lets you take control of the city of Chicago. Everything is connected, and with your super hacking capabilities the entire cityscape can turn into your own personal playground.

During the PAX East video presentation gamers were given a small taste of what to expect from the title. We first saw a video showcasing some of the capabilities of the anti-hero Aiden Pierce. The things he can do can range from the smallest tasks like stealing personal info to something as big as stopping an entire transit system. While you can do just about anything, it won’t be easy when you have Chicago’s central operating system (ctOS) watching you, not to mention one other unknown organization keeping tab on your actions.

The next video we viewed showed Aiden’s actions from the viewpoint of ctOS, where our protagonist steals a lobbyist’s PIN number and withdraws a little cash. Soon Aiden intervenes in an attack on a woman by her estranged husband, chasing him down the street, and capturing him by hacking an electrical fuse box to throw the perpetuator off his feet and onto the ground. The police show up, but Aiden slows them down by accessing their speed traps. He makes his escape by stopping a train, and jumping on top for a free ride away from the cops.

The gameplay looks very impressive so far, but I am very curious to find out how Watch_Dogs will feel control-wise. No doubt we’ll find out soon enough at this year’s E3, but until then keep your eyes wide open for more info as it comes.

Check out the video below to watch Watch_Dogs from the perspective of ctOS!
