PAX EAST 2013 | Sixty Seconds To Save The World With “Super Time Force”

Once in awhile there comes a video game where the definition of insanity — where you do the exact same thing and expect a different result — comes in handy. Capybara Games has taken this instance and transformed it into one of the most craziest games I’ve seen on this year’s PAX East floor: Super Time Force.

Super Time Force has you take control of seven different characters as you defeat foes, bosses, and closed-off areas. Sounds pretty standard, right? Not when you have only one minute to reach the distance between point A and point B in each level. So how do you reach that long point before time runs out? Simple: you Time Out!, a maneuver that reverses time, letting you go back to a specific point in a game without having to interrupt your previous character.

You start the game out with thirty lives (a nod to Contra, according to game creator Kenneth Yeung), with the ability to choose from six different characters that range from your basic shooters and knights of chivalry to even a kooky dinosaur that looks like he came right out of a certain 90s TV series. When you die (and you will) you can use Time Out to reverse time and try to rescue that life from being extinguished. You can also use Time Out to help take out tougher bosses with multiple characters at the same time.

The Time Out process is a lot trickier than it sounds, as the proper timing is needed to get it right. No lie: it took me almost fifteen minutes to get the first level down patch, thanks to there being so much happening on the screen at the same time. Snipers, flying gunners, aliens, and traps are in front of you at all times, making it extremely difficult to get through a single room without biting the dust. Super Time Force is tough to the eleventh degree, but it’s also a ton of fun to watch the silliness happen.

While there is no set release date yet for Super Time Force, Capybara Games is hoping to have it out on Xbox Live Arcade by the end of the summer. When it does finally hit online, be prepared for a crazy good time that will require going back said time to beat the game.
