PAX EAST 2014 | During Hostage Crisis, The “Gods Will Be Watching”

Posted on April 11, 2014 AT 04:00pm

Multitasking in a game can be a pain at times, but if done right it can lead to a great strategic narrative where the right set of timed tactics can lead to victory. In Deconstructeam’s Gods Will Be Watching such a multitasking effort can lead towards not just frustration, but also a somewhat realistic portrayal of what a dire situation can move towards if not done properly and carefully.

Deconstructeam will be featuring three different scenarios on each of the three days of PAX East. For Friday they have shown off a scene where you need to keep hostages at bay while your boss hacks into a computer mainframe for some needed technology that will be used presumably for evil rather than good. While he hacks away, it is your task to give commands, ranging from firing warning shots, boosting the hack capabilities, and treating the hostages with either a calm sense of integrity or with brute force and violence.

How you decide to juggle all these tasks depends on how good you are with focusing on everyone and everything in the room. Many times I accidentally found myself paying too much attention to my hostages, while the defense forces came up too close to our base to take us all down. In one instance I tried to hurry along the hacking process, which lead to my hostages trying to escape with a 50/50 success/failure rate (which also led to our team’s demise). It’s an incredibly tough scenario to try and succeed at, so much in fact that I wasn’t able to beat it at all during my time in the booth. (If I had more, though, I probably would’ve done a little bit better.)

Fans of classic games will love Gods Will Be Watching‘s overall look, as it brings to mind a very LucasArts feel to it. With its point-and-click control setup many will find plenty of comparison’s between Deconstructeam’s newest title to the days of Day of the Tentacle and Space Quest III. While the point-and-click scheme is fairly easy to use, the fact that you need to make split-second decisions during this specific level showcased why you’ll need to be quick on your feet when going up against a level such as this.

Gods Will Be Watching is due to be released sometime this summer via Steam on PC and Mac and mobile devices. If you want a game that has an old-school look mixed with a smart tactical mentality, then this game might just be right up your alley.
