PAX East Day One: It Begins

Posted on April 11, 2014 AT 08:44am

I’m two hours into PAX East 2014, and I gotta say it feels good to be back. As the expo floor opened, throngs of gamers, nerds, and their friends and family poured into the space like the infected from World War Z leaving in their wake, a wave of exhilaration like I’ve never felt before. I can only liken it to the look I’ve seen on my little cousin’s face when she met Cinderella at Disney World when she was little. (Or that kid that really loves coloring.)

As far as the feel of the expo floor goes, Indie Gaming is here in a big way. The back half of the main hall is full of Indie developers, with the other half of the hall is home to some of the larger development houses. I just love being able to walk into a space where I can spend time playing and getting to know what Proletariat Games and Fire Hose Games are up to and then turn around to do the same with Bethesda and Ubisoft.

Tabletop and PC gaming round out the expo space, along with various peripheral and merch booths that will, in fact, take all my money.

While Nintendo is notably absent from the show (again) Both Microsoft and Sony have a presence on the expo floor. While neither house is showing off anything completely new, Microsoft has brought it’s open world creation game Project Spark to the show. If you’ve never seen the game before and are at the show, this is the perfect time to do so.

I have not been a huge fan of the game myself – it seems like an awful lot of time, effort, and planning that I’m not that keen on devoting to a “game” – the more and more time I spend watching demos of the game, the more appreciate level creators/animators and the hundreds of people that bring games to life.

Over the next few days, I’ll be sharing some hands-on accounts, observations from people watching, and candid cosplay shots here on our page, but be sure to stalk our PAX East coverage on social via our Facebook Page ( and Twitter feed (
