PAX East | Preview | Octodad: Dadliest Catch
Posted on March 23, 2013 AT 01:33pm
When you learn a game’s tagline is, ‘Loving father. Caring husband. Secret Octopus.’ you owe it to yourself to investigate, which is exactly what happened to me today while exploring the MEGA-Indie booth at PAX East.
While making my way up and down the varies aisles that make up the MEGA-Inde booth – the largest single entity space on the show floor this year by the way – I happened across a crowd of people huddled around a single screen hysterically laughing and generally having a great time. As I’m never one to miss out on a good time, I decided to see what all the hubbub was about and join in and it was definitely worth it.
As I got closer to the group I heard one person explain the game and was instantly hooked. In Octodad by developers Young Horses you control Octodad – an octopus pretending to be a human being – and your goal is to get through your day-to-day chores and activities without being discovered. Sounds easy, right? But remember you are an Octopus, an eight-legged creature stuffed into a suit, the “simple” act of moving around isn’t so simple. Octodad is a physics based game where picking up a tie can be riotously complicated. I quickly found myself laughing along with the growing crowd behind me as a new person started to play through the game.
This person was playing a piece of a level in which “Dad” had to get dressed in a tux, put on his bow-tie and top hat, and very carefully make it down the aisle to his beloved wife without arousing onlooker suspicion. It would be a cakewalk if “Dad” didn’t move about the level like a wacky-wall-crawler.
Creative, challenging, downright fun, and recently Greenlight on Steam, Octodad: Dadliest Catch recently Greenlight on Steam will be playable on your MAC/PC/Linux box soon.
