REVIEW | Co-Op “CrossCounter” Excessively Repetitive

Sollmo had an online hit on its hands when it brought its cutesy fighter RPG Buddy Rush onto smartphones, tablets, and Facebook last year. This year they nix the cuteness for badass animesque characters battling robots in Operation CrossCounter. Unfortunately it comes with its flaws.

Operation CrossCounter has you and two online players/AI characters battle it out against robots sent to take over your universe. You are given the option to carry up to two weapons, along with up to nine items that can be used during battle such as elixir and other power-up items.

As you win (and at times lose) missions you are given XP that helps to level up, and the more you level up the more areas you can unlock to battle in with your friends and AI characters. Skill points can also be achieved to help add an extra boost to your weapons, stamina, and energy control (which can unleash powerful attacks if patient enough).

So far the majority of these levels have had me battling robots, overtake areas, and collect items throughout the vicinities. It’s fun, but CrossCounter‘s echoing missions leads much to be desired. Sure, it’s got a great online co-op setup that works wonderfully (not once had I been kicked off a server), but it feels like I’m doing just the same thing over and over again. It brings to mind the biggest issue people had with Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime: it keeps recycling the same battles one after another. Even with its “War Situation System,” which makes every play-through different each time you give it a go, the game lacks a solid assortment of variety that usually draws players into a game like this.

For a free online game the graphics look pretty good, appearing as if they’re somewhere between Dreamcast and PS2 quality. Yes, there are plenty of iOS games out there that look lightyears better than what you see in CrossCounter, but for a small independent company out of South Korea the overall appearance of the game is well above par. Controls work very well, too, as the touch screen aspects of combat react very quickly. However its soundtrack, like the gameplay itself, gets annoying after the first twenty minutes, with the same guitar solo-filled music playing on a loop on just about every area I’ve come across.

Though Operation CrossCounter boosts hours of battles with online friends, the flaws of repetition downgrade the value of this game. While it’s free-to-play you’ll find yourself having to put money down for some of the bigger and better upgrades, not to mention “instruction manuals” that let you unlock the usage of weapons you find around the levels. Thankfully those who purchase it before July 12 will receive some free goodies such as coins and combat medicine, so if this game entices you at all I’d say download it now before this offer ends.

Operation CrossCounter is a step backwards for Sollmo, playing lightyears behind its Buddy Rush predecessor. Because of its repetitiveness CrossCounter feels more like a chore instead of a good time. It has its fun moments, but in the long run Operation CrossCounter is destined to be swept beneath its much-better competition. Still, give it a try and see if it’s worth your attention. (It’s free, after all, so it’s not like you’ll have anything to lose.)
