Roses, thorns, cross-dressing and swords? What is this, Revolutionary Girl Utena? No, it’ The Rose of Versailles, and it came out decades before the brilliant Be-Papas work.

The story revolves around Lady Oscar, who is called that because she was raised from birth as a male, hence the odd combo of name and title. It is set in the late 1800s, during the French Revolution. So to recap this is a 1970s historical fiction shoujo anime. If you’re still with me, then you are still curious enough to check this out. The Rose of Versailles will be streamed on Viki (don’t look at me; I hadn’t heard about it until this month) for the US and Canada in December, then released on DVD.
