Why I’m Excited About the PS4

It’s official, Sony’s next console is finally out in the open.  While watching the presentation, imagining what will be coming next for the new console when it launches later this year, I couldn’t help but be excited.  Little to my surprise, after the show was over, I surfed around a bit to see what other people were thinking and there were quite a few naysayers.  While there were also plenty of folks who are equally as excited as I am, I felt I would take just a few minutes and list off a few of the reasons why I’m truly excited for Sony’s next console.

Focus On Developers

One of the biggest obstacles towards making a great consoles, that honestly each company has made one time or another, is alienating game developers.  Either making their hardware too difficult for devs to program for or being too difficult to work with has held back more than a few great indie games.  In their conference, Sony stated pretty clearly that their designing their new machine to be a s friendly towards developers as possible so that nothing will be holding people back from making great games.  There can be no console without awesome games to play on it, so it’s good to hear that they’re making a good effort in that direction.

Tricked Out Hardware

It’s been quite a while since we’ve seen new hardware and it’s beginning to show.  There is always a long period where the limits of each generation of consoles has their limits tested and the PS3 games have seen a lot of growth.  That being said, a ceiling has been hit on how good they can look and it’s very exciting to start that whole process over again.  The demos that were displayed looked pretty amazing and I can’t wait to see where the limits of this new hardware are going to take new game design.

Pretty Next Gen Games

A lot of people complained that not enough was shown, but I guess my expectations were set a little lower, because I saw more than I was expecting.  Almost everyone had at least a little bit of in-game footage to show and it already looks pretty spectacular.  The in-game videos looked about on-par with the best CGI cutscenes in the games on current-gen consoles.  Pair that with David Cage hitting the stage and showing off the facial animations the system is capable of and I’m already quantic dreaming of how amazing a sequel to Heavy Rain could look.

Sharing Is Caring

I could understand why some people would be completely uninterested in some of the new sharing features, but I think they look pretty cool.  I’ve definitely had a few moments where I’ve been playing a game, something crazy happens and I wish I had been recording it so I could share it with the world.  With the ability to scroll back a few minutes and upload gameplay footage, they’re making it easy as pie.  As well, if I’m skeptical about whether or not I want a particular game, I can spectate with a friend that already has the game to get a good idea of whether I want it or not.

Suspend/Resume

I consider myself a fairly patient individual, so I’ve never had a huge problem waiting to boot up a quality game.  That being said, I’m glad they’re addressing this issue for the folks who would rather not.  It’s always a bit awkward when I put in a game to play it that moment with a friend and then have to spend a good 10-20 minutes waiting for the thing to install.  Being able to simply stop a game anywhere will also be a great solution for those times when you just don’t have the time to find a savepoint.  Just ask the people who were at my surprise birthday party one year.

I’m not saying that they answered every question about the system and I’m completely satisfied.  Quite the opposite, the conference really created more questions than it answered, but they have almost an entire year and several more opportunities to answer those questions before the system launches.  In the meantime, all I can do is be excited and try to imagine the possibilities to come.
