Wii U Preview Event | The Final Countdown

Posted on September 13, 2012 AT 09:23am

Much anticipation was riding on Nintendo during today’s preview event. What was revealed wound up being the knockout punch we were looking for at E3.

It was revealed today at the Nintendo Press Event that the Wii U will be heading to stores in America on Sunday November 18th. There will be two sets: Basic and Deluxe. Here’s what they will each have:

BASIC SET ($299.99):

  • 8GB of memory
  • GamePad
  • HDMI cable
  • Sensor bar
  • AC adapter

DELUXE SET: ($349.99):

  • 32GB of internal memory
  • Everything in the Basic configuration
  • GamePad charging cradle
  • Stand for both GamePads and the console itself
  • A copy of Nintendo Land

32GB doesn’t seem like a lot for the $350 price point, but odds are the high price is more geared towards the Gamepad itself. Plus there will be SD inputs, so you can always add memory later (something the other consoles can’t do). New Super Mario Bros. U was also announced as a launch title.

Nintendo also showcased a couple exclusives from Platinum Games that will be heading to the console. The first, The Wonderful 101, was first announced at E3 2012, will have players using 100 superheroes at a time to stop an alien invasion. The second, and biggest of all the announcements, was Bayonetta 2, the sequel to the popular shoot ‘em up. Though no release date was announced for it, it’s estimated that it will be out during the second half of 2012.

Also revealed at the event was Nintendo TVii, an interactive television setup. Here viewers will be able to watch, record, chat, and even favorite their TV shows and movies. Sports fans, too, will be drooling over current gameplay statuses, team stats, and key events that have happened in the game. Although no official release window was announced, it was revealed that Nintendo TVii will be free-for-all.

Activision also publicized many key titles will be coming to the Wii U around the launch window, including 007 Legends, Skylanders Giants, the exclusive Transformers Prime, and Wipeout 3. Also showed was Call of Duty: Black Ops II, which takes advantage of the GamePad’s second screen by letting co-op and multiplayer modes use that instead of the usual split-screen setup we’ve come to sometimes gripe about.

Although there were no other new first-party titles announced, what has been uncovered thus far has set the stage for Nintendo to take control of the 2012 holiday season. When November 18th comes around, you can be sure that there will be many a gamer that will be ready to go one-on-one with the Wii U.
