Yu-Gi-Oh! BAM Plays Faster

Posted on June 27, 2012 AT 02:00pm

Right away, I have two things I need to admit to you.  When I was in high school, I was a pretty avid tournament player of the Yu-Gi-Oh! card game.  Honestly, it was a well-designed game that involved a decent combination of luck and skill to really get into.  Finding those rare and shiny cards was also a bit (read as extremely) addictive.  The second thing I have to admit, is that I recently discovered the new Facebook game Yu-Gi-Oh! BAM and I think I may have a new addiction on my hands.

This new spin on the popular card game takes the usually long matches and streamlines them down so they’re very quick.  They’ve taken your five monster and spell card slots and knocked them down to three.  At the beginning of the turn, each player draws cards until they have three in their hand.  They then place monsters and spells face down on the field.  One at a time, from the left to the right, the cards are revealed.  Monsters with higher power defeat the opponent directly in front of them.  Monster effects and spell cards can be used to increase the power of your monsters so that you can defeat your opponent.

Taking it down to this simple formula is really fun and manages to make matches really fast while still retaining the essence of the original game.  Even with the game being streamlined as it is, as you get further into the game, mixing your spell and monster cards can get pretty deep.  You just have to make it through the earlier part of the game where it’s really just who has the stronger monsters.

There is also a pretty large story mode for the game containing over 30 chapters.  As you go through each chapter you get to duel against characters from the manga and show.  Each battle earns you various collectibles that you can go to a store to trade for brand new cards.  Aside from the story mode, you can battle against any Facebook friends in these short matches.  You can also team up with a friend to take on particularly powerful foes in the story mode.

If you’re a fan of the show, the card game, or any of the various video game releases, this game is definitely worth checking out.  Now if they can just have special holographic cards that you can collect, I’ll be hopelessly addicted.
