Marvel Announces (And Confirms) Upcoming Movies

Big box offices assemble!

At this past week’s Comic-Con, Marvel Comics announced the names and release dates for a number of their superhero movies.

Scott Pilgrim director Edgar Wright will handle the same duties for Ant-Man, which he has co-written with Joe Cornish (Attack The Block). At Comic-Con, Wright showed off some very rough test footage, but didn’t announce who might star in the film. Though he might want to do that soon since, it was revealed, that Iron Man 3 — which will be out March 3, 2013 — will feature a Wright-directed post-credits scene in which Ant-Man confronts Chen Lu.

Speaking of Iron Man 3, Marvel have finally confirmed the long-lingering rumors that the bad guy would indeed be The Mandarin, and that he’ll be played by Sir Ben Kingsley. Also joining the cast is Stephanie Szostak (Dinner For Schmucks), though they haven’t said who she’ll play.

Marvel also announced that the second Thor movie will be called Thor: The Dark World, and will be released on November 8, 2013. Chris Hemsworth will once again play the titular god, with his fellow Thor castmates Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddeston, Anthony Hopkins, Idris Elba, and Stellan Skarsgard also returning.

That film will be followed on April 4, 2014 by the second Captain America film, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. In the comics, Winter Soldier was the code name for Cap’s sidekick Bucky after he was brainwashed into being a Soviet assassin.

Finally, Marvel confirmed that they are making a Guardians Of The Galaxy film, which will be based on the supergroup that first hit comics in 1969, but was later revived in 2008. That film will hit theaters on August 1, 2014 and, yes, will include Rocket Raccoon.
