Who Watches The Watchmen?
DC Comics have announced that the first issues of “Before Watchmen” — the controversial prequel to Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’s iconic 1986 series “Watchman” — will be out in June.
Out June 6, “Before Watchmen: Minutemen #1” is being written and drawn by Darwyn Cooke (“DC: The New Frontier”). It is the first of six issues.
The next week sees the release of “Before Watchmen: Silk Spectre #1,” the first in a four-issue series that’s being written by Cooke and Amanda Conner (“Power Girl”), who is also handling the art.
June 20th sees the release of “Before Watchmen: Comedian #1,” which is being written by Brian Azzarello (“100 Bullets”, “Joker”) and drawn by J.G. Jones (“Shi”). It is also the first of six issues.
Finally, “Before Watchmen: Nite Owl #1” ends the month on June 27 with the first in a four-part story written by J. Michael Straczynski (“The Amazing Spider-Man”) and drawn by Joe Kubert (“Tor”) and his son Andy (“X-Men”).
All four books will feature a back-up story, “Crimson Corsair,” that’s written by Len Wein (“The Amazing Spider-Man: A New Goblin”) and drawn by John Higgins (“Judge Dredd”).
Also included in this series is a four-issue series called “Before Watchmen: Rorschach” that’s being written by Azzarello with art by Lee Bermejo (“Batman/Deathblow”), another four-issue series of “Before Watchmen: Dr. Manhattan” penned by Straczynski with art by Adam Hughes (“Justice League Of America”), a six-issue run of “Before Watchmen: Ozymandias” written by Wein with art by Jae Lee (“Witchblade”), and a one-off called ‘Before Watchmen: Epilogue” that will wrap up the entire series. However, DC has not indicated when any of these books will be released.
The “Before Watchmen” series has come under fire from a number of comic writers, artists, and fans, including Moore, who wrote the original book but turned down an opportunity to work on this prequel series.
All of the books will retail for $3.99 each.
