EGM SPOTLIGHT: New documentary MAN VS SNAKE is not your daddy’s KING OF KONG – and you can help on Kickstarter

Posted on August 31, 2013 AT 09:02am

Nearly 30 years after Tim McVey (the gamer, not the bomber) recorded the first billion-point score from a single quarter on the classic maze game Nibbler, a pair of filmmakers are set to unleash the latest man vs machine documentary called Man vs Snake: The Long and Twisted Tale of Nibbler.

The film was the brainchild of filmmakers Andrew Seklir and Tim Kinzy (former Battlestar Galactica editors), who uncovered a tale of a small-town man (McVey) seeking to reclaim a record he originally tallied at the infamous Twin Galaxies arcade of Ottumwa, Iowa way back in January 1984. With cases of Mountain Dew and a few friends by his side (friends that included the infamous Billy Mitchell and EGM Publisher Steve Harris), McVey fought fatigue, faulty joysticks, and the game itself for over two days to finally register the world’s first billion-point score – the highest ever recorded on a classic video game.

“Man vs Snake tells the story of how Tim not only became the first person to achieve the billion point score, but follows him on a very personal journey as he seeks to reclaim his record,” explained the film’s director Andrew Seklir. “The movie chronicles Tim’s duel against fellow gamers from around the world who are also gunning for the record and shows how gaming can provide a powerful and inspiring story that we think everyone will connect with.”

The producers have set up a new KickStarter page to raise the funds necessary to put the finishing touches on their opus. Check it out by clicking here to view their pitch, the movie trailer, and much more. It’s a great opportunity to do what you can to help a talented pair of filmmakers get the word out about a fun and entertaining movie that documents one of the more interesting events from the classic era.
