Killzone: Shadow Fall art director Roy Postma and assistant art director Dan Calvert discuss the creation, design, and perks to building character models on the PS4 in a post on the PlayStation Blog.
The Black Hand are a subfaction of the Helghast who operate in cloak and shadow, serving as infiltrators within the Vektan side of the wall dividing their territory from Helghast territory. The Black Hand operate outside the main Helghast military body, and as such were given their own unique look and style.
Postma describes the Black Hand’s costumes as a “crossover of design elements from both main factions, combined into a whole new look.” This decision was meant to reflect the close proximity and cultural saturation of the Helghast and the Vektans. Part of their design includes scraps wrapped around their bodies that contain cloaking projectors attached that operate similar to the ones used by Helghast snipers.
As for what the PlayStation 4 and the power of next-gen brings to the table when bringing an artist’s character design to life in-game?
“Having all those loose-fitting elements move naturally, respond to the motion of the character, and collide with one another would have been impossible without the advances in our simulation and character rigging,” said Calvert. “In addition, we’ve become a lot better at cloth and civilian-style clothing—instead of sculpting the character’s clothes out of digital clay, we now cut and sew digital clothing patterns and then precompute how they would hang on the character to get the most natural folds and seams possible.”
