Bethesda has tapped retired game critic Adam Sessler to produce a series of in-depth video interviews for The Evil Within, the publisher’s upcoming survival horror title from Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami. At the moment, the first two videos are available over at the Bethesda Blog?or right here on this very page, because that’s the kind of nice people we are here at EGM.
The first clip, entitled “The Art of Survival,” has the Sess sitting down with Mikami and producer Masato Kimura to discuss what defines the survival horror genre and how The Evil Within fits into that broader tradition. If you’re into the nitty-gritty side of game design, there’s some interesting stuff on how the simplest decisions?how fast enemies move, how much freedom the player has to navigate?can make a huge impact on the overall experience.
The second clip, “Inside the Mind of Shinji Mikami,” has Adam discovering a tiny door in a run-down office building that lets him see through the eyes of legendary game designer Shinji Mikami for 15 minutes at a time. Wait, no, that’s the plot to Being John Malkovich. This is just an interview about Mikami’s game design philosophy and how it informs his work on The Evil Within. My bad.
The Evil Within launches on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on October 14th.
