I had a chance to get my hands on Far Cry Primal and it?s definitely turning the Far Cry formula on its head.

Playing as Takkar at first felt intimidating, knowing I?d never have a gun to defend myself with in 10,000 BC. But leave it to the Far Cry guys to make sure you?ll have all the tools you need to wreak havoc in this unexplored time period.

You see, Takkar is the Beastmaster, able to tame animals and use his furry and feathered friends to his advantage in fights. Like in the video above, using his owl for recon, and his bear as a distraction, Takkar can easily move through even large groups of enemies with his club, bow and arrows, or spears to weaken enemy tribes and strength his own.

Besides the bear, Takkar can also tame big cats like cheetahs and sabertooth tigers, or canine companions like different breeds of wolf. We also saw a variety of side mission types, like instead of liberating an outpost, sometimes Takkar just had to burn the entire thing to the ground.

Although our time with Far Cry Primal was short, it left a lasting impression, coming off as the freshest Far Cry experience yet.

Far Cry Primal launches on Xbox One and PS4 on February 23, 2016, and PC on March 1, 2016.
