Red Thread Games has announced that the first episode of Dreamfall Chapters will go live on October 21.
Book One: Reborn will be available on PC, Mac, and Linux, and is the first of five planned episodes. The decision to switch to an episodic format was taken back in June as the developer didn’t know how big the game would eventually become. The original plan was to release the whole game in November of this year, but Red Thread soon realized that major cuts would have to made to achieve this, and so decided to adopt the episodic format.
“We could have made deep cuts, removed a lot of the characters, story-lines and locations — but we would have ended up with a different game than the one that’s played inside our heads for the better part of a decade, a different game than the one we’ve promised our backers. We would have lost much of the magic and narrative depth. And we would’ve still had to delay our release into next year,” the developer explained back in June.
“We’ve also realized that while, as a small studio, we are capable of producing a massively ambitious game likeDreamfall Chapters, we’re not satisfied with our ability to properly finish, polish and bug fix the whole game in one go. The amount of work that goes into every chapter of every book is enormous, and we do not want to compromise on the quality of our game and our story.”
In August, Red Thread Games announced that Dreamfall Chapters would be coming to PlayStation 4 as a timed console exclusive after its PC release.
The release date of Book Two will be revealed shortly after the release of Book One.
