Teddy Diefenbach, the lead designer for indie game Hyper Light Drifter, has been hired on by Square Enix as their new Creative Director.

In a recent blog post on his website, Diefenbach announced his new position at the Montreal Studio. There he says he will be joined by “new friend and future collaborator” Renaud Bédard. Bédard is best known for his work on Below and Fez, games that—much like Deifenbach’s Hyper Light Drifter—are known for their unique visual styles.

“This team knows how to design a small-scale game that lets them take creative risks,” said Diefenbeck. “I’ve been indie long enough to be wary of Big Company pitfalls, but conversation after conversation convinced me that this team have created a studio that protects the creative process, with the first priority being original, valuable, beautiful work. This studio is doing it right.”

With Square Enix’s recent delve into mobile games such as Hitman GO and Lara Croft GO, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the indie designer tapped to continue to elevate similar titles. Perhaps a Dues Ex GO? Or Just Cause GO? It’d be interesting to see either franchise through the eyes of Diefenbach.
