EA has announced that it is “not planning” to release a new Star Wars game in fiscal year 2014, which ends March 31, 2014. The publisher also revealed that any new Star Wars games will be developed using DICE’s Frostbite 3 engine.
The deal with Disney for exclusive rights to develop and publish “core” Star Wars games was signed on Monday. It sees EA developing games for the franchise “spanning all interactive platforms and the most popular game genres.”
EA Labels president Frank Gibeau revealed in a recent earnings call that EA’s Star Wars games will be entirely new stories and are set to be developed using the Frostbite 3 engine. “Some of our most renowned and innovative creative teams are working on ideas in the Star Wars universe,” he said. “The new games may borrow from films, but will be entirely new stories and gameplay. Powering it all will be our Frostbite 3 game engine.”
