Sega is currently investigating how to make HD remasters of Shenmue 1 and 2 a reality, according to Sega Europe community manager, Dan Sheridan.
“Of course we would love to release these tomorrow,” he said during the latest episode of Sega Central. “Sadly it’s not as simple as porting the games to the current platforms as we will need to ensure that any HD remaster lived up to the quality of the original titles. And with games as immersive as Shenmue 1 and 2 there are further complications from licensed products that were included in the original games.
“That said, we’d love to do it, and are currently investigating how to make it a reality.”
The original Shenmue launched for Dreamcast back in 2000 and was followed by Shenmue II in 2001.
The latest entry in the series, Shenmue III, is in development for PlayStation 4 and PC, and is scheduled to launch in late 2017.
