When you pick up Sleeping Dogs this week, you won’t just have what’s on the disc to look forward to?Square Enix and United Front Games have six months worth of DLC planned for the game.
“Sleeping Dogs is a game we know fans will want to keep on playing, so over the next six months we’ll be creating a series of new content packs giving players everything they need to keep enjoying the game,” said Square Enix London Studios general manager Lee Singleton in today’s announcement. “We want to create something to suit everyone’s play style from cool cars and high-speed missions to outlandish outfits and game-extending mission packs. The game launch is just the beginning.”
In giving a quick look at some of what players will be able to expect, one revealed release will be the 80s-inspired Retro Triad Pack?where players will get “a killer old school outfit with its own player buffs and funky kung-fu van.” The content packs will start in September, when two packs?the Racing Pack and SWAT Pack?and planned for release.
I hate to be a broken record on this, but personally, I’m just not a fan of post-launch DLC like this. No offense to Sleeping Dogs?everybody here in the EGM offices who has played it has loved it, and it sounds like it’s not lacking for content at all.
That said, when you announce DLC for a game before that game’s even on store shelves, I feel a little raw about the whole situation. And, if I was the type who wants to get DLC packs, wouldn’t it make more sense for me to just wait and buy the game later versus at launch? Otherwise, I have to either go back and play the whole game again to experience the DLC, or I’ll be going back just for the DLC when my mind will no doubt have moved on to another game.
Uncertainties like these are why I usually just avoid any sort of DLC content for games. If it isn’t part of the game I buy at a store (or as a digital download), then I probably won’t experience that content. However, I know more and more that I’m in the minority on this.
So, for those of you who do love DLC, should you also end up loving Sleeping Dogs, you’ll have more to look forward to in the coming months.
