Starbreeze Studios plans to open a virtual reality arcade in an undetermined Los Angeles venue, codenamed Project StarCade.
Starbreeze, creators of such popular titles as Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons and the Payday franchise, claims this project will bring the “premium VR experience” to the masses. This announcement was made at the VRLA Winter Expo earlier this week.
“We continue to iterate the fact that VR really needs to be experienced in person to fully be able to appreciate the phenomenon, and why not have your first experience in a real premium setting in our StarVR headset?” said Starbreeze CTO Emmanuel Marquez, “We’ve managed to secure a prime location where people are welcome to step into our StarCade and enjoy our Overkill’s The Walking Dead VR experience.”
Marquez continued by discussing the internal and external content support the StarCade will receive.
“We’re developing our own StarCade catalogue of experiences, but we’re open to any content. We will invite developers to join us and give them the opportunity to put their content in our StarCade. We as an industry continuously need to educate ourselves to make VR truly successful, and this is just the first step in our planning to do so.”
One of the first titles to break in the new hardware and venue will be the aforementioned Walking Dead first-person shooter, developed by Overkill Software with input from creator Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment. The game is expected to launch sometime in the second half of 2017 on the StarVR and SteamVR headsets, as well as other non-VR systems including PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
The StarVR does not current have a price point, and neither the headset nor the StarCade have a launch date as of yet.
