Skyrim’s Woes on Playstation 3 Explained

THE BUZZ: Bethesda and Playstation 3 gamers have always had a hard time getting along. To be frank, Bethesda games tend to break on Sony’s platform. With that said, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is one of Bethesda’s best releases yet in terms of quality and stability. Although if you ask the average Playstation 3 gamer they will tell you all is not well in the land of Skyrim.

A report by Kotaku reveals that Bethesda seems to be working tirelessly to right some of its wrongs with gamers, answering complaints that frequent lock ups and memory issues are hampering their experience with Bethesda’s latest opus. Last week at DICE, lead game designer Todd Howard described with some detail the trials and tribulations with the Playstation 3 version of the game. Howard explained that the team was aware of potential memory issues and tried to prevent it from occurring, as well as revealing what could be at the heart of the issue. Howard said, ”The way our dynamic stuff and our scripting works, it’s obvious it gets in situations where it taxes the PS3. And we felt we had a lot of it under control. But for certain users it literally depends on how they play the game, varied over a hundred hours and literally what spells they use. Did they go in this building?”

Bethesda had hoped that their 1.2 patch would resolve a lot of these issues with gamers, but found that while it may have helped gamers to restart their consoles every few hours it did not eradicate the problem completely. The team even went as far as to ask gamers for memory saves so their developers can find patterns in the matrix. With patch 1.4 Bethesda is confident that most gamers will be happy, but Howard was quick to point out that he is painfully aware that not everyone will be content. “Now that we’ve been through this, we’re not naïve enough to say, ‘We have seen everything,’ because we have to assume we haven’t,” he said.

So there you have it, Bethesda feels your woes, and while it may not make everything better at the very least Bethesda is actively and aggressively working on a solution.

EGM’s TAKE: Sure your copy of Skyrim may be almost useless at this point but find solace in the fact that someone, somewhere is trying to right this wrong. In the meantime, send Bethesda an email or two or twenty, it’s sure to light a fire under them to get this donkey back on track. Or you can read “A Song of Ice and Fire” and satiate your hunger for blood thirsty, fire spitting dragons until all this gets sorted out. We’d even go so far as to suggest going to Komodo Island and speak to a real Komodo Dragon, we’re sure your thu’um with work on them.
