THE BUZZ: NFL Blitz is back, and while fans are undoubtedly excited for the arrival of this arcade classic on current consoles, will it still pack the same punch in light of the NFL’s recent efforts to clean up its act?
We had a chance to dig deeper on this issue with the team at EA Tiburon during a recent interview with EGMi: The Digital Magazine—and, according to project lead Dave Ross, EA Sports has been working hand in hand with the NFL but still had to hurdle a few obstacles to get things done.
“They know that we’re working on this title,” Ross says. “We’ve been working with them, in partnership, in order to get it to the stage that it’s in today. That being said, they’re very clear that they’re not the same organization they were back when the original versions shipped.”
And Ross insists that Blitz’s over-the-top style is still a perfect fit for the NFL—and that the league definitely knows what fans want. “They understand the difference between an over-the-top arcade experience relative to a simulation football experience,” he says.
“We are different,” Ross continues. “We’re 7-on-7, 1st-and-30, no penalties, no injuries—it’s just over the top, and they’ve been engaged, and they’re certainly interested. They’ve had their fair share of input, and we’ve been able to work with them.”
EGM’S TAKE: Blitz is all about big plays, late hits, and unbridled showboating, so it’s good to know that Tiburon was able to maintain the game’s sense of swagger despite potential roadblocks from the so-called “No Fun League.”
Slated for a January 2012 release for $14.99 on XBLA and PSN, NFL Blitz’s blend of old-school sensibilities and new-school connectivity definitely has us hyped for the new year.
